Supplements to boost your immune system

We are not what we eat, we are what we absorb.

Your immune system is a complex network of cells and proteins that defend the body against infection.

The immune system keeps a record of every germ (microbe) it has ever defeated. When the microbe enters the body again and the immune system recognises it, it can destroy the microbe quickly. It is important to optimise our immune system by making sure that we eat nutrient-dense foods, get enough sleep, staying hydrated and exercise. However, it is still possible to be deficient in certain vitamins and minerals even eating a lot of nutrient-dense foods.

Here are some recommended supplements to help boost your immune system:

1. Vitamin D

Vitamin D is one of the most crucial vitamins required by the body. It helps boost the immune system and fights off infections. It also keeps our bones strong and healthy by helping to regulate calcium and phosphate in the body.

In regards to the ongoing pandemic, there have been multiple studies done which state that there is a correlation between Covid-19 and vitamin D deficiency. The recommended amount of vitamin D per day for healthy maintenance levels is 1000-2000iU, depending on the individual.

2. Zinc

Zinc is a key mineral that metabolises nutrients and helps with immune function, DNA and protein production.

It is crucial in the development of the immunity cells such as NK cells (natural killer cells). They play a major role in rejecting the host of tumours and virally infected cells. If you are zinc deficient, it can affect your macrophages, which are important cells in our immune system that form in response to infection by recognising them and destroying the targeted infected cells.

Therefore making it a great supplement to boost the immune system to avoid getting sick, especially during this pandemic.

3. Vitamin C

Vitamin C – an essential micronutrient required by the body and a powerful antioxidant. It is one of the most commonly used vitamins for boosting the immune system. Vitamin C not only boosts the production of white blood cells known as lymphocytes (such as NK cells and T cells) and phagocytes, they also help protect the body against viruses and infections.

4. Glutathione

It is believed that glutathione is the most powerful anti-oxidant in the body. Research shows that active Glutathione primes our NK cells and our T cells which are the frontline fighters of infection.

Glutathione protects our mitochondria (the powerhouse of our cells) to ensure that they are not damaged by heavy metals, toxins, and free radicals. And aids our bodies detoxification system.

In addition, when supplementing for Vitamin C and Glutathione, it is more beneficial to go for the Liposomal version of the supplements (liposomal Vitamin C and liposomal glutathione). This is because the absorption rate from the liposomal version of these 2 supplements is significantly higher than the standard norm. Vitamins and minerals are only effective if we are absorbing them.
