Brazilian Jiu-jitsu: a way to change your life?
What is Jiu Jitsu?
Jiu Jitsu is more than simply a competitive sport. It is an ever-evolving martial art, and practical form of self-defence that is both intellectually stimulating and great exercise. It brings people together from all walks of life with a common goal to better themselves, to overcome challenges and to live healthily and positively.
Health and fitness
Jiu Jitsu is not only fun and addictive, it is also great exercise. It is among the sports that encourage the highest levels of endorphin release in the body, which is known to improve cognitive functioning.
Jiu Jitsu is a great way to blow off some steam. But research also shows that regular exercise can improve your mood, increase alertness and give you more energy, all of which contribute to productivity at work. Exercise curbs anxiety and depression and helps you deal with stress. It reduces the risk of developing type 2 diabetes, hypertension and heart disease as well as improving the immune system, meaning fewer days off work.
Jiu Jitsu brings people together like few other sports. On the mats social status disappears and everyone is an equal, except with respect to their ability as a Jiu Jitsu practitioner. As you train and spar with your partners every week lasting friendships are born.
Jiu Jitsu’s key feature as a form of self-defence is its universal applicability, regardless of gender, size or athletic ability. It provides the ability to control someone with technique designed so that a smaller, weaker person can overcome a bigger, stronger, heavier assailant. Its renowned effectiveness is based on the fact that it can be practised safely on fully resisting opponents. Because the focus is on grappling and control rather than striking, it enables practitioners to safely defuse physical confrontations without causing or receiving harm.
