8 reasons why women should lift
Even though more and more women have started to incorporate weight lifting in their daily routine, some still refuse to pick up dumbbells heavier than 2 kgs because they don’t want to “look like men”.
The truth is, lifting weights won’t make women look like men, simply because women naturally do not have enough testosterone to bulk up like men.
Instead, weight lifting offers so many benefits to the ladies!
You will burn more calories. Yes! You read that right! Weight training has the “after-burn” effect aka. “excess post-exercise oxygen consumption” which allows you to continue to burn fat even after your session. By building lean muscle mass, your basic metabolic rate (BMR) will also increase, meaning you burn more calories even when you rest.
You will feel stronger mentally, and physically. You will look awesome when you lift some serious weights at the gym, you will feel unstoppable when you reach a “personal best” at the gym. Heavy lifting also makes you stronger in other aspects of life, you will find it much easier to complete physical tasks, i.e. doing your grocery shopping for your entire family, carrying 5 bags at once…
You will sculpt the body shape you want. All exercises will allow you to burn some calories and lose some weight (if you’re in a caloric deficit); however, no exercise can help you change your body composition and create that hourglass body like weight training does. Just like if men wanted to build big arms and chest, ladies would have to do the same (lift weights) to get the round shoulders and glutes.
Your mood will lift, and you will feel less stressed. Weight lifting will encourage your body to release a great amount of endorphins a.k.a. hormones that offer pain-relieving and anti-depressant effect. With less stress, your sleep quality will also improve.
You will look and feel younger. It’s been suggested by researchers that weight training can reverse ageing process by reducing muscle and bone loss, increasing energy, improving brain function, and insulin resistance etc. Weight training will also improve skin tone and elasticity.
You will live longer. It’s no secret that exercising promotes good health. Not only does weight lifting help to boost your immune system, maintain a healthy heart, and blood sugar level, it also increase bone density and muscle mass that prevents you from injury.
